Tea was first discovered in China and originally consumed as a medicinal drink as long ago as 200 BC. Traditional black tea comes from the top leaves of the tea plant which are cut and dried. Herbal teas on the other hand can be a mix of many different herbs and plant parts. In the seventeenth century, bitter Indian tea containing tannin appeared on the market as a supplement to the milder Chinese teas which contain no tannin.
As a beverage, tea is an easy drink to make. Leaf tea or herbs are covered with hot water and allowed to brew until theflavour has infused into the water.
